Kōrero Tuakana: Legacy Rawiri
We chat with one of our Tuakana, Legacy, about Mental Health and her journey on the Atawhai program
1. What growth have you noticed about yourself since joining Atawhai?
Since joining Atawhai, I've noticed significant growth in my ability to manage stress and stay present. My mindfulness practice has led to improved emotional regulation and resilience when I’ve been faced with everyday challenges. It has also helped me develop a more positive outlook on life.
2. What advice would you give to others wanting to join?
I would advise newcomers to approach the program with an open mind. Before joining Atawhai I decided mindfulness practices were not for me, like meditation and yoga. Only because of its representation on movies and social media, I never really saw people that looked like me practising these tools. But when I decided to have an open mind and consider a new approach (Atawhai) to improve my mental health it changed my life.
3. What is mental health to you?
To me, mental health is the state of emotional, spiritual, and social well-being. It encompasses how we handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions. Good mental health is essential for overall quality of life.
4. Without this program where would you see yourself today?
Without Atawhai, I might still be struggling with managing my stress and emotions. The program has provided me with valuable tools and strategies that have greatly improved my mental well-being, social and spiritual well being.
5. What tool has been the most useful in your daily life and why?
The 7 pillars of mindfulness practice has been the most useful tool. It helps me centre myself during stressful moments and enhances my mental and emotional resilience throughout the day.
6. What is one key life lesson you have gained throughout this program?
One key life lesson I've learned is the importance of living in the present moment. This shift in perspective has helped me reduce anxiety about the future and let go of past regrets.
7. Where would you like to see the kaupapa go?
I would like to see Atawhai expand its reach to more communities and continue to innovate in delivering mindfulness tools. I believe Increased accessibility and diversity in programming could benefit even more rangatahi around the world.
8. What draws your attention to this program?
The program’s focus on mindfulness tools and its holistic approach to mental health and well-being draw my attention. I also love how Atawhai has become a safe space for many rangatahi who have joined as well as me, to be themselves unapologetically.
